Impressions
The Sigma-XQ 70-230mm f/4.5 Macro-System Zoom MC (1977) is a well-built and stylish telephoto zoom lens with a constant opening of f/4.5 at either 70mm or 230mm. The lens uses the Sigma YS interchangeable mount; it is basically a Tamron T-mount but has the additional feature of supporting auto diaphragm, you can also use T-mount adapters but it will not have 'auto diaphragm'.
The overall design and look of the lens has a professional feel to it, and a smaller f/4.5 opening is more affordable than the f/2.8's. The built-in retractable hood is long enough to really make a difference. Focusing and zooming have a smooth operation. Closeup can be engaged at any focal length, by controlling the 'Macro Focus' ring; maximum magnification is at 1:4.
The lens elements are multicoated, but of the early type (elements come with blue and amber sheen, not all elements appear multicoated). Some factors come at play when judging the image quality, such as the coating used, deterioration from age and cleaning, and definitely my skills (I had alot to improve at the time). The output is generally pleasing with a vintage character wide open at f/4.5, but sharper stopped down to f/5.6 or f/8.
What's nice about this lens is that even if it breaks or stops working, you could still carry it around as a fashion statement!
Macro focusing can be engaged at any focal length |
A tripod collar is necessary for big heavy lenses like this. |
Sigma YS is literally a T-mount with auto diaphragm. You can also use T-mount with this lens. |
Fitted with T-mount to Nikon F adapter. |
